BabYLON- Its ORIGIN
In the book of Genesis we see the origins of Babylon. We
learn that Babylon was founded by Nimrod
who was the grandson of Ham; Noah’s wicked son.
Genesis 10:6-10 provides the origin of
Babylon. Genesis 10: 6-7 begins:
The
sons of Ham were Cush,
Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were Seba,
Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
Mizriam was
the Hebrew name for Egypt. We begin to see that from Ham come nations that will
in time afflict the nation of Israel and will also lead the Israelites astray
in their idolatry.
The Bible
records of Nimrod and his kingdom of Babel in verse 8-12.
8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before
the Lord.” 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and
Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,
Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).
The verse tells us that Cush, Noah’s oldest
son, begot Nimrod. The name Nimrod in the Hebrew means rebellion or valiant. In
family birth order the oldest son is closest to the father in age and as the oldest
more is expected of the first born. Generally they receive more time from the
parent than any other child born to them.
It is no
surprise that Nimrod’s name means rebellion. We see the same evil that was in
his grandfather characterize him in part because he would receive the teachings
and values or lack of them from his father, which also come from the father’s
father.
So what was
Ham’s Sin that Nimrod would acquire?
Ham’s Sin
Ham was the
son of Noah who sinned against his father. Noah had too much to drink and fell
asleep naked. Ham upon seeing his naked
father most likely made fun of him and told his other two brothers. On hearing
Ham’s mockery of his father instead of joining in they picked up Noah’s garment
and walked backwards and covered him.
God then cursed Noah’s son Canaan (Genesis 9:20-25.) Some have
speculated that sinful acts took place in the tent, or that Canaan was somehow
involved. It could be that he was part of this mock fest of Noah or because he
was like his father and he was cursed. The Canaanites went onto give Israel a
good deal of trouble in the land of Israel.
We see from
Ham’s actions an act that is not only immoral but a person who lacks boundaries,
which can be said for all serious sinful actions and crimes. Noah was passed out sleeping naked in a
position that was unbecoming and private. Shem and Japhet respected their
father’s dignity and privacy by walking backwards to not take a glance at their
father in this undignified position and they covered him.
In our society one’s dignity is guarded and
for this reason sick and terminally ill patients who are cared for in hospitals
are covered up while they are incapacitated and unable to care for their bodily
functions. Medical workers are trained
to guard the dignity of the person they care for by keeping them covered when
while they are compromised health wise. A person is even guarded after death
and for this reason medical and rescue workers
cover the body of the deceased. In
Noah’s compromised moment Ham attempted to make his father a spectacle and
shame him.
Ham was
making fun of his father, totally disrespecting him by turning his nakedness
and drunkenness into a spectator event. He wanted his brothers to join in with his
viewing his father as looking ridiculous.
It was a moment for Ham of total disrespect. It revealed his rebellion
and disdain for his father’s authority. It
violated one of the ten commandments of honoring your father and mother. For it
Canaan was cursed to be a servant as all underachievers who never achieve due
to their rebellious attitudes and lifestyles.
Thus from Ham
would come Cush, Egypt, the Canaanites
and through Ham’s grandson the ultimate in rebellion against God: Babylon. We
also see coming from Ham Godless nations steeped in idolatry.
Nimrod would
not only found Babylon but also founded Assyria and built Nineveh: other nations
steeped in idolatry. These cities would cause Israel the most grief and God would
use them to judge the nation.
Nimrod
becomes the founder of Babel or Babylon.
He is like another hunter in the Bible and that is Esau who became the
father of the Arab nations. Nimrod was called a mighty hunter in Genesis 10:9,
while Esau was called a cunning hunter. Genesis 25:27.
In
Genesis 11: 1-9 we get the account of the Tower of Babel, which sheds light on Babylon it reads:
Now the
whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it
came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the
land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us
make bricks and bake them thoroughly.”
They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And
they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a
name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole
earth.”
5 But
the Lord came down to
see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And
the Lord said, “Indeed
the people are one
and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing
that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come,
let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand
one another’s speech.” 8 So
the Lord scattered them
abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the
city. 9 Therefore
its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there
the Lord scattered them
abroad over the face of all the earth.
Babel, founded by Nimrod and like his name which
means rebellion, in an act of defiance of the Holy God they tried to be like Him
in attempting to build a tower to reach to heaven.
The Bible tells us “they had brick for stone and asphalt for mortar.” Meaning it is not
the real solid building materials and are the cheap and inferior replacements,
which is a depiction of Babylon and its teachings that men and women follow. It
would be the source of the Whore of Babylon and all false religion.
We see a picture of the man who started Babylon,
along with his father and uncles, Nimrod’s uncle started Egypt, and Nimrod as
both rebellious and valiant and following the family tradition of would start
the land of Babylon and other nations steeped in idolatry.
We would see Babylon coming to judge Israel at
the end of the Kingdom period in Israel’s history. It is the place that the
book of Daniel begins and where we God gives Nebuchadnezzar the vision of the
empires that would succeed Babylon and control Israel and the visions would
depict the final world empire that will lay siege to Israel and set up the
abomination of desolation in the Third Temple.
This empire that Daniel
describes with great iron teeth and exceedingly dreadful and terrible who
conquers many nations and destroys the Holy People. It is this empire that is joined
with the Whore of Babylon depicted in Revelation 17 and 18. Her appearance on
the Beast of Revelation depicts her significant role.
