I. Numerology of Gold Represents the Heavenly or Idolatry |
Gold
in the Bible is
a dichotomy, it represents idolatry but also
represents the heavens.
Numerology-the Heavenly
We see Solomon in
1Kings Chapter 6 making the temple of pure gold, Including the floor.
1 Kings 6:30, “And
the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.” We then see
the gold and silver given as an offering for the building of the arc of the
covenant which was made from pure gold and for the lampstands and bowls used in
the worship of God. We see gold used in
the priests clothing as well.
Exodus 28:36
commands, “And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and grave upon it, like
the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD.”
When we think of the description
of heaven we think of streets of gold. In the book of Revelation we are told in
Rev. 21:18 that the Holy City is made of pure gold like clear glass. Revelation
21:21 specifies that the streets are made of pure gold like transparent glass.
There are four uses for gold in
the Bible
1.
Representing
the heavenly
2.
Representing
idolatry
3.
For
currency to buy and sell
4.
For
ornamentation-jewelry
In the verses for gold’s
heavenly uses we see the number 12, which is also the number of the apostles
and the 12 tribes of Israel. Note
the following verses:
Numbers 7: 84, This
was the dedication of the alter, in the day when it was anointed, by the
princes of Israel: twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver bowls, twelve
spoons of gold:
Numbers 7: 86, The golden
spoons were twelve, full of incense, weighing ten shekels a piece, after
the shekel of the sanctuary: all the gold of the spoons was an hundred and
twenty shekels.
The total of 120
shekels is our number 12 again.
We see the Queen of
Sheba giving 120 talents of gold to Solomon.
2 Chronicles 9:9
affirms, “ And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold,
and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such
spice as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon.
In Revelation 21 in
the depiction of the New Jerusalem we see the number 12 throughout in the
measurements of the Holy City, where God Himself will dwell among His people.
Numerology on the evil side:
Notice in the
previous passages the number 12 and the
number 12 for the alter, but Micah’s idol was 11, which is one short of 12 as 6
is one short of 7, Notice also the 66 cubits of Nebuchadnezzar’s image.
Daniel 3:1 describes
the idolatrous image, “Nebuchadnezzar the
king made an image of gold whose height was 60 cubits, and the breadth there of
six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.”
As with the graven images in the
Old Testament, we are told in Revelation 13: 14 (the false prophet) says to them that dwell on the earth, that
they should make an image to the beast, and the riddle with the number 666
follows in Revelation 13:18 as the number of the name of the Beast.
We see 666
associated with idolatry. Solomon took in 666 shekels of gold a year. Solomon
was given to idolatry. He violated
Deuteronomy 17:17 which commanded: “Neither
shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall
he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”
Ezekiel’s vision in
the 6th year in the 6th month is one of great abominations
of idolatry taking place within the Jewish temple.
Thus we have
idolatry represented as 6, and we see double sixes and ultimately the triple 66
in the Revelation, which is the idolatry that leads to the end of the age.
Gold on any Idol was corrupt and an abomination to God
The very gold used
on the idols or graven images itself is an abomination to God that he says to
discard as a monstrous cloth.
Deuteronomy 7:25
states, “The carved images of their gods
shall ye burn with fire: though shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on
them, nor take it unto thee, lest though be snared therein: for it is an
abomination to the LORD thy God.”
Isaiah 30:22 adds, “ Ye shall defile also the covering of thy
graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou
shalt cast them away as a monstrous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee
hence.”
When God gave the
Israelites victory over Jericho, He commanded the Israelites not to bring out
of the City any of the accursed items. Achan disobeyed and took out various
items including gold. Achan’s sin of
taking the Babylonian garment and a wedge of gold and two hundred shekels of
silver after caused God to withdraw from Israel and they fell to a weak enemy
(Ai A-I) until the sin was found out and Achan and his family were destroyed.
God’s anger then subsided. (Joshua 7)
Joshua 6: 18 states,
“And you, by all means abstain from the accursed things, lest you become
accursed when you take of the accursed things , and make the camp of Israel a
curse, and trouble it.
The very gold that is used on an idol becomes an abomination to God and a curse to the partaker and was to be discarded.
Thus we see the curse associated
with idolatry and more so of the
idolatry associated with the triple 6 of Revelation 13:18.
