Connecticut
declared a State of Emergency over Ebola even though no cases have been reported in the State. Governor
Malloy’s emergency is in anticipation of an Ebola case surfacing in Connecticut It is no different than if
dangerous storm is striking Oklahoma and Connecticut issues a State of
Emergency to prepare the State for a possible tornado.. There is something
seriously wrong with this picture. Declaring a State of Emergency when there is
no emergency is the same as when the media flashes a sign that says Breaking
News, when the news they are about to report is insignificant. But, by placing breaking news on the screen they can get views or page hits. Breaking news is overused and State of Emergency is following behind.
Governor Malloy had to declare a State
of Emergency to get the state to take the correct precautions Without the declaration of emergency,
officials have no statewide ability to isolate or quarantine people who might
have been exposed or infected. These same rules do not apply in New
Hampshire or Massachusetts to get those States to coordinate the appropriate
action. Connecticut needs to make changes in its laws so that they do not have
to declare a State of Emergency to get coordinated action to make preparation
for something as serious as Ebola. Connecticut looks foolish issuing a State of Emergency when there is no emergency. You shouldn't have to yell fire to get a fire department in your community as Connecticut is doing to get coordinated preparations.
Governor Malloy’s concern for Connecticut is not unfounded.. With Connecticut's population of
3.6 million and 940 thousand that live in Fairfield County, which borders New York and are the burbs
for many who commute to New York City to work. For Connecticut residents the close proximity
to NYC, which in the United States is the one location that is visited by the citizens
of every country in the world, he has reason to be concerned. Just given the
population of New York City's 8.5 million, which does not include the tourists and commuters, it would be easy for any virus to spread. In Connecticut nearly a million citizens live just over the New
York border. Malloy's precautions are good steps, but State of Emergency is now getting
overused like Breaking News. Connecticut despite its high percentage of educated residents could not get its laws straight so that a State of Emergency does not have to be declared to make preparations.
I
learned that Connecticut declared a State of Emergency from someone telling me
that Connecticut had its first Ebola case. What else is everyone to think when Connecticut
declared a State of Emergency over Ebola?
Regarding the spread of Ebola, we can see where all of this is heading, having States make preparations is a sign of things to come.
