In the book of Leviticus one reads over and over about the offerings made by fire that are a sweet savor to God. The use of an offering made by fire being a sweet savor is used in 17 verses in the bible. “An offering made by fire” is used in 30 and offering made by fire is used in over 50 verses. Why are the offerings made my fire are so precious to the Lord as a sweet aroma.
The term made by fire is used over and over regarding the burnt offerings. I thought about Daniel and the lion’s den--his fiery furnace trial--of our trials-- when we go through our hardest trials and difficulties in this life--that is when our prayers and our worship is the sweetest to the Lord.
We are made by fire during those times when the fires come into our lives and burn up the dross. The priests offered their offerings made by fire and in the process they waved the wave offerings. They waved the unleavened bread which is a symbol for Jesus. They celebrated Jesus even before He came to the earth. As they make their offerings by fire, they held Jesus above their heads in their wave offerings,
1 Peter 4:12-16 tells us:
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.
In Revelation 3:18, Jesus counsels the listener to buy from Him “gold tried in the fire that you may be rich” and he is talking here about spiritual wealth.
Our prayers are sweetest to God as we pray to Him and rely on Him during life’s most difficult moments.
As we live in these last days, the times are very difficult and will grow even more so as the Tribulation approaches.
There is a duality with fire in the Bible. While fire is used on the altar of sacrifice and within the lives of believers to purge them, it is also a symbol of God. Jesus shines as the sun; God’s throne is partially engulfed in flames. God appeared as a burning bush. The Holy Spirit descended as tongues of fire. Fire is almost symbolic of God’s holiness along with His power. Ironically only through the fires of our trials do we draw closer to God and see the beauty of His holiness, and experience His power.
